The extra help to pay for energy bills, clothing and food was due to run out on 30 September but the Treasury is looking at extending the help amid a widespread backlash over winter fuel cuts for 10m pensioners
Money to help lower income households pay for food and energy bills is set to be extended beyond September as Rachel Reeves tries to head off a growing rebellion over the axing of winter fuel payments for most pensioners.
Councils can use it at their discretion to give cash grants of up to £290 to help people buy food – through parcels, vouchers or cash – pay for energy bills or other household essentials such as clothing., over her decision to cut winter fuel payments for 10m pensioners, with only those eligible for pension credit still receiving the money.
There is speculation the fund could be extended into 2025 but further details will be announced in the coming weeks. Some Labour MPs have urged the Chancellor to look at a tapering system, where those on the cliff edge would still receive some support for energy bills in the winter months.Asked to defend the winter fuel cut at his press conference, the Prime Minister claimed it was “not a particularly well-designed scheme frankly” but insisted the government would ensure that “support is there for those pensioners who need it most”.
