The Children's Commissioner has slammed the fact just 400 new homes will be built this year with 48,000 now on the waiting list
With 48,000 now on the waiting list for social housing amid plans for just 400 new start social homes, Northern Ireland's Children's Commissioner says the latest stats highlight a worsening situation. Speaking for the many young people either homeless or facing homelessness, Chris Quinn says they have the "right to an adequate standard of living" which is "clearly not being met".
Commissioner Quinn said: “The right to family life and an adequate standard of living is the basic minimum a child or young person should expect from the State, and this is clearly not being met to the best of our ability. Last year, NICCY produced a report called 'A Place to Call Home' which made a number of recommendations to the Department for Communities and NI Housing Executive to tackle the growing housing crisis in NI.
Stormont announced in 2020 that the Housing Executive would be given powers to borrow money to build new homes and in December 2023 it started building six homes to Passive House standards - which its chief Grania Long said could provide a "blueprint for the future of social housing".
