The African American Library at the Gregory School will get $5.2 million to repair damages sustained during Hurricane Harvey. Houston City Council on Wednesday approved the funding. The library sustained significant damage during the 2017 hurricane by water breaching the window seals and other parts of the building, according to the city council agenda.
The library contains manuscripts and records, historic photographs and oral histories that chronicle African American life in Houston and Texas. The funds are intended to repair or replace parts of the roofing and windows, upgrade the building's HVAC system and restore parts of the interior and exterior of the building, the agenda read. The city and an architectural team have been in touch with the Texas Historical Commission to meet all requirements.
