Kenneth Anim was accused of running a scheme to trick people into online relationships and convince them to send him money.A Houston man on Thursday was ordered to be held in custody until he stands trial for allegedly running a nationwide fraud scheme, in which he was accused of tricking people into online romantic relationships and convincing them to send him millions of dollars.
The Justice Department described Anim as a “money mule” — a person who transfers illegally acquired money on behalf of and at the direction of others. Officials said Thursday that there was at least one other unindicted co-conspirator involved in the scheme The FBI began an investigation into Anim in 2019, Rayes said. The fraud was alleged to have happened from 2014 to 2019.U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray denied Anim’s request to be released until his trial.Anim was connected to the scheme because his name was on the incorporation documents for the businesses where people sent their money, Rayes said.
