Houston police this week released three clips of body-cam footage from the incident. In Canales’ video, the sergeant can be seen leaving his vehicle and running for a few seconds before a person in dark clothing emerges from between what appear to be two trash or recycling receptacles. As they get closer to each other, a shot can be heard.
A scuffle appears to follow, the video shows, and Canales drops to the ground. While the camera is angled toward the ground, one of Canales’ hands is visible and more gunfire can be heard. The sergeant remains on the ground for more than 20 seconds before getting up. Canales and other officers are then shown with their weapons out while a person is in view, lying on the ground.
Canales can be heard saying he’s going to step back because he has discharged his weapon. Some officers go to check on him, and authorities near the suspect can then be heard calling out for gloves for first aid.
