Houston rapper Big Pokey's freestyling was the stuff of legend
at the Pour09 club in Beaumont and died at a hospital Sunday. He was 45. The rapper’s family confirmed his death in a statement via his publicist.

Three years later he put out his first album, “The Hardest Pit in the Litter,” and followed it in 2000 with “Da Game 2000,” Each album sold more than 80,000 copies, a remarkable figure for an artist without a national distribution deal. In 2004 and 2005, when the music industry outside of Houston took notice of the city’s homegrown scene, Pokey was one of the voices that resonated. Paul Wall’s big hit “Sittin’ Sidewayz” sampled a Pokey line from “June 27th Freestyle.” So it only made sense that Pokey would drop 16 lines that referenced the Screwed Up Click and the city’s car culture and a geographic point of origin: “Raised on Scott in the Yella.
