Matt Lundquist, a lifelong athlete and runner, at Josey Lake Park Friday, Nov. 18, 2022 in Cypress, TX. Lundquist had Osteochondritis dissecans, which is when bone and cartilage start to separate from the joint. When it actually fell off in 2020, the bone and cartilage lodged in his knee which made him unable to bend his leg. He had to wait for his first surgery through COVID, then spent 8 months on a donor list.
“I don’t sit still well,” he said with a laugh. “Knowing I would be out for a significant amount of time, I thought let’s get my strength up, build muscle, keep myself busy. I just adapted — and changed things up a bit.” His father-in-law had had recent knee and shoulder surgery and recommended his doctor Dr. Bruce Moseley, orthopedic surgeon at Baylor College of Medicine.According to the American Family Physician clinical journal, osteochondritis dissecans affects about 15 to 30 out of 100,000 individuals.
Moseley was able to see Lundquist right away and order diagnostic images, which confirmed that indeed his bone and cartilage had separated from his knee. That’s exactly what was happening to Lundquist. His own bone could not be saved. An operation was almost scheduled — but then COVID-19 placed all elective surgeries on hold.
After the operation, he spent about 10 weeks on crutches, then two weeks slowly walking, using one crutch for balance. After that, started physical therapy.
