The oldest animal at the Houston Zoo, Mr. Pickles, is the father to three baby radiated tortoises. Mr. Pickles, 90, has been at the Houston Zoo for 36 years.

The eggs laid by radiated tortoise Mrs. Pickles roughly five months ago have hatched at the Houston Zoo, revealing three tiny offspring.

The father, Mr. Pickles, is the the oldest animal at the Houston Zoo and is the most genetically valuable radiated tortoise in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. Mr. Pickles, 90, has been at the zoo for 36 years, while Mrs. Pickles arrived in 1996; they have been fan favorites of zoo goers for years. The pair have only reproduced one other time in 1997 with one hatchling.

Radiated tortoises are critically endangered and produce few offspring. So when the herpetology keeper saw Mrs. Pickles laying her eggs, he alerted the animal care team, who put the eggs in the zoo's Reptile and Amphibian House. This way, they ensured the eggs would hatch due to Houston soil not being hospitable for the Madagascar native tortoises.

The baby tortoises names are most fitting to be part of the Pickle family: Dill, Gherkin and Jalapeno. At just a few centimeters small, they will be withheld from the public eye until they are big enough to safely join their parents.
