Houston-area shoppers took a break from Thanksgiving leftovers for what once was a traditional holiday rite: Black Friday shopping at bricks-and-mortar retailers. The tradition has dimmed for most, as retailers have replaced their door busters -- those sales that drew hundreds of shoppers to stores in the wee hours after the holiday -- with online deals that began weeks ago.
The scramble is the last thing the Tijerinas wanted to deal with on a rainy Friday. Instead, they planned to swing by Academy around 11 a.m., then maybe to Home Depot just to check a few things off their shopping list.“I don’t like waiting in line, and if I do, I pick out one or two things, grab them and go,” Monica said. “I like to go in and get out.”When they left the house around 9 a.m., the only in-person shopping they expected to do was for groceries.
She sees a lot of value in in-person shopping: She likes being able to see how big or small things are, and to take it home immediately. But the convenience of having items delivered to your doorstep can't be beat, she said. When she gets home, she said she planned to get on her laptop and shop deals online."This is like any other day," Singh said."I actually think it's less busy than a regular day," Brar replied.
