As society rethinks the future of work, we asked 4 women how they’d like to remake their work weeks to help them better balance their lives

I’ve been teaching in American University’s Department of Literature since 2009.

Posting some of my class sessions online would also give me more flexibility: It would mean more time for student meetings in those afternoon hours when I’m typically teaching in person, or more time for research or lesson planning. Basically, it’s just more time during the day to do things that sometimes get pushed into evening hours.I’m a Democratic state representative, representing parts of the Madison Isthmus.

Federal policy could help here. Rideshare drivers are usually classified as contract workers rather than employees and thus miss out on the benefits that formal employees get, such as unemployment and health insurance. Regulating these jobs more closely at the state or federal level could help ensure more steady pay and better benefits.I’m vice president for marketing and communications at the National Women’s Law Center.
