The poor nesting success of 2022 could impact Texas turkey hunting seasons in 2023 and...

Shannon Tompkins/Houston Chronicle

“For the most part, there aren’t going to be many jakes and jennies across the landscape, at least across the Rio Grande range,” said Jason Hardin, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s turkey program leader.Hardin added that of the more than 100 birds his team trapped as part of relocation efforts, only one was a juvenile.

“A lot of those hens — and the gobblers for that matter — were just in survival mode. You get to triple digits and those birds are living in the shade, they’re panting constantly and there’s not a lot of time for them to go out and forage and build up fat reserves, and there wasn’t the green vegetation needed to do that,” Hardin said.

So, hunters might not see the negative impact of the poor nesting season on turkey populations until next season.
