The Western Australian government has started a recruitment drive to attract nearly 31,000 qualified Brits to move to the state. The government has been holding information sessions around the UK, with Australian police officers on hand to offer advice to prospective recruits, and an advertising campaign will be rolled out nationwide this month.

WA Police and Defence Industry Minister Paul Papalia has been in the UK in the past few weeks fronting the drive to “steal” thousands of British workers. Espousing the benefits of moving down under, Mr Papalia saidSalaries in WA are often 50 per cent higher than in the UK, the WA government says, and the state capital Perth offers 3,200 hours of sunshine annually, compared with around 1,400 hours in UK cities such as London.

But it’s not just Western Australia that is looking for workers – there are thousands of vacancies in public sector roles across Australia. The southern state of Victoria, home to the city of Melbourne, is reportedly looking to fill a 1,000 teaching places, whilst Queensland is hoping to attract 500 overseas police officers to join its ranks.

Ama DeGraft-Johnson, 38, first visited Australia at 26 and after travelling for a few months she was soon enticed by the lifestyle. She took up a job in early years care and was offered sponsorship. Over ten years on, she now has citizenship, is settled in Sydney with her partner and works as a primary school teacher.
