Carlos Sainz delivered a Ferrari win with a smart, calculated display — and some help from old teammate Lando Norris.
There was a point where Sainz had everything under control at the front. He’d retained his pole position at the start, and had Leclerc as a rear-gunner in second place creating a buffer to the cars behind. “I could go forever at this pace,” Sainz commented on the radio at one stage.He wouldn’t get the chance to go forever. On Lap 20, the safety car — called for debris after Logan Sargeant hit the wall — forced everyone to pit earlier than planned.
That left Russell looking for another way to win by using something Sainz did not have: a fresh set of medium tires. Pitting would cost him over 20 seconds and track position. It would also give him the chance to make up seconds per lap through the final stages, potentially enough of an advantage to win the race. It was down to him and Mercedes to decide if it was worth the risk of throwing away a secure second to gun for victory.
Seeing the challenge, Sainz stopped nursing his tires and picked things up, setting a personal best lap time — only for Russell to go 1.7 seconds quicker on the first lap. The Mercedes continued ate away at the margin at a similar rate, prompting Ferrari to tell Sainz he needed to go a bit quicker. The time to be tactical was over. He had to push again.“It surprised me quite a lot how quickly the Mercedes managed to pass Charles and close the gap on Lando and me,” Sainz said.
