Why Daniel-Day Lewis' Lincoln Had A High-Pitched Voice Daniel Day-Lewis could only rely on the written accounts of historians as to what Lincoln's speaking voice really sounded like, since there was no technology at the time that could have recorded it. Lincoln's voice was historically considered to be high-pitched and somewhat nasally, as if it sounded too small or soft to belong to such a symbolically prominent and physically sizable man.
Day-Lewis claims to have heard the original voice in his head while he was preparing for the role. He worked diligently to recreate the high-pitched tone from inside his mind that could be both accurate to documented history and to his own personal instinct. While the real Lincoln's voice is estimated to be high-pitched, it likely wasn't squeaky or unpleasant, since crowds of people traveled to hear him speak across the country without complaint.
