Questions remain about why Letby, 33, chose to kill tiny babies who were supposed to be in her care, and how she was able to carry out her killing spree over the course of more than a year without being caught
On 8 June, 2015, Letby injected air intravenously into a baby boy just one day old, causing him to collapse immediately. He was pronounced dead at 8.58pm, just 90 minutes after the nurse clocked onto her night shift.
Doctors managed to save the girl’s life but she had to stay in hospital for another month to recover. Some were attacked when another nurse briefly left the room and others were harmed towards the end of Letby’s shift so they deteriorated when she was gone. Here’s a timeline of how Letby was eventually, caught, and how doctors raised concerns early in her killing spree, only for the nurse to be able to continue her attacks.
But the unit manager described Letby’s constant presence as “unfortunate” and said she was an “exceptional” nurse. The meeting was finally called two months later after two more babies nearly died. But senior managers appeared to be in denial at the meeting and Letby was allowed to continue working, Dr Brearey said.By the end of June 2016, another baby had collapsed and two of three premature triplets suddenly died within 24 hours of one another.
At that stage, Letby had not been suspended but rather moved over to the hospital’s risk and patient safety office. She is understood to have had access to sensitive documents, as well as some of the senior managers who were investigating her.due to the damage it could cause to the hospital’s reputation, instead turning to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health to review the neonatal unit. The RCPCH reviewed the hospital in September 2016 and the report was finished two months later.
