After first launching as a podcast, the just-published book includes short interviews with comedy icons including Mel Brooks, Carol Burnett and Jordan Peele.
“The History of Sketch Comedy” is the new book from actor Keegan-Michael Key and his director-producer partner Elle Key. was just the person to write “The History of Sketch Comedy.” At least, that’s what Elle Key thought.
They both laugh because, in the end, they did the book together. First, however, they made a 2021 Audible podcast of the same name. That’s the pandemic for you, turning books into podcasts and then back into books again. “I’m a little relieved you feel that they’re similar, so you don’t see all the heavy lifting and rewriting,” says Elle Key, a writer, director and producer for film, TV and theater. “I really worked pretty hard to try to figure out how to keep the energy of the podcasts in the book.”
There are, of course, multiple examples from Key’s own work, including sketches he wrote as a member of the Second City improv troupe in his hometown of Detroit, “MAD TV,” where he played characters such as the over-the-top gym coach who loved shouting as much as he did his short-shorts, and various bits of genius from “Key & Peele.”
It was a classic “Saturday Night Live” sketch many will remember: Eddie Murphy auditioning a Stevie Wonder impersonator, played by the real Stevie Wonder, and chastising him for how bad his impression is. It ends with Murphy doing his own Stevie impression, singing “Ma Cherie Amour” until Stevie unleashes the real deal for the finish.
For Elle Key, it was also a childhood TV moment watching the Carol Burnett show that demonstrated the power of sketch comedy to make laughter.
