The new regulations will have huge ramifications for aspiring clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa
Clubs are set to vote on new financial rules that could be “game changers” for the competition at the Premier League’s AGM in the next fortnight in Harrogate.
Those are rough calculations and of course that doesn’t allow for an expected spike in commercial revenue next season which would give Newcastle greater scope to spend but as insiders at the club continually stress: “FFP is a real thing for us”. But there are clearly drawbacks and not everyone believes it is a done deal. Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser toand expert on financial fair play, thinks clubs may yet change their mind because the new rules will prove so complex. He also points out that Premier League clubs will need to spend more on accountants and legal advice to ensure they comply.“There’s going to be a complex matrix of accounting that is going to have to be maintained by clubs and it’s going to be quite onerous.
The worry is that the beefed up Champions League – with more prize money – and the world club cup will bring in hundreds of millions more to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in future seasons, making Aston Villa and Newcastle’s task in catching them even more difficult. That’s why the Magpies voted for it although Villa’s decision not to looks curious.
Such a plan would surely have appealed to Newcastle, who could have “bought” the opportunity to buy further to support their top four ambitions.Which brings us to another big issue currently bubbling away in the background: associated party transactions.
