Imran*, a 20-year-old maths student in Dhaka, assembled teams to guard temples and churches in his area. Ajim*, 21, a business student in Dhaka, described how young Bangladeshis are a lot more aware of their rights than the older generation who “took corruption as a part of the system”. Last week, the protest movement called for an all-out strike, urging people to not go to work or pay their taxes and bills and to join the “March to Dhaka” in defiance of a nationwide curfew.
Without the army’s support, which had bolstered her 15-year rule, Ms Hasina abruptly left the country the following day.
