The Browns will need all of the premier cornerback play they can get, and Newsome can help provide it either inside or outside.
Newsome might end up loving his dual role this season if he gives it a chance, and demonstrates in training camp that he’s bought into the new scheme and the team concept. He’ll also be better inside this season, having played it for a year, and will have more opportunities to make a huge impact. Maybe that elusive first interception will come early and he’ll get on a roll.
But Schwartz, who won a Super Bowl as coordinator with the Eagles, has been a coordinator for 14 years and a head coach for five, and knows how to get the most out of his players. He also knows how to deal with stars who want to shine. “A lot of guys do it and can operate at a high level inside and outside,” Kevin Stefanski said last season. “Greg can do it, as well. I think he has shown that. Again, has it been perfect? No. I am sure there are plays that we can do better, but if you can do that, the versatility that brings to your football team is a big deal.
It’s no secret that Newsome is trying to get himself right and make the most of his career here. On Tuesday, he switched agents for the third time since his rookie season in 2021, when he began his career with Jimmy Sexton of CAA and then hired super agent Drew Rosenhaus just two months after the draft. Last April, he switched to Cleveland-based Klutch Sports and is back with Rosenhaus as of Tuesday morning.
