I Am Legend 2 will follow the alternate ending of its predecessor film instead of the theatrical version and there are some steps it can take to avoid confusion. The news that I Am Legend will receive a sequel 16 years after its initial release has been exciting news for many. However, the information that the film would bring back lead actor Will Smith - whose character died at the film's conclusion - inspired some questions.

The central plot of I Am Legend 2 will take place 20 to 30 years after the events of the first movie to better align with the I Am Legend book, which explores how Robert is a murderer in the eyes of the infected I Am Legend vampires who make war on him for his experimentation on their people.
Why I Am Legend 2 Shouldn’t Ignore The Ending Change If I Am Legend 2 acknowledges its predecessor's original ending in this way , it will create a stronger foundation for the franchise's story. If, instead, the sequel ignores the fact that Neville originally died in I Am Legend and pretends that the alternate ending was the true one all along, it would make it seem like the film had made a mistake. This would mean a weaker plot that would be difficult for audiences to take seriously.
Additionally, by switching things around with no real in-plot explanation, I Am Legend 2 would make a trilogy even more difficult. With a weak franchise foundation, any subsequent films would only be building on a story that was never firm, to begin with, and potentially setting itself up for failure. This would be incredibly frustrating given the nearly two decades fans have had to wait for a sequel.
