'The less we see one another, the more willing we are to listen to each other when we’re together. And the more I speak my truth, the better the dynamic becomes.' AcrossTheAisle
The first time I stopped speaking to my brother was my junior year of high school. It was spurred on by the “Day of Silence,” an activity organized by liberal student council members who sought to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ rights by refusing to speak for the day. I opted to cover the event for the student newspaper so I wouldn’t have to actively choose to participate — or actively choose not to.
It took me a few years to realize this was a childish way to address the chasm that had opened up between myself and my brother, a hardworking, by-the-books conservative who thinks he’s oppressed as a white male, and my dad, a self-proclaimed patriot who adheres to the “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” brand of personal fiscal responsibility.
I went to a small evangelical school for undergrad because it was free, and I still believed back then that Christianity was more than just a system designed to oppress women and keep the weak and poor under foot. Even as I followed the dress code and hid alcohol in shampoo bottles to avoid suspension, I became braver. Being an ally in a hyper-religious setting taught me what real oppression looks like.
Ahead of the 2012 presidential election, I told my dad in a brief phone call that I would be voting for President Obama because of his stance on the climate, LGBT issues and health care. He told me why he thought I was wrong and said he was hurt that I was effectively canceling out his vote. But he still mailed me my absentee ballot papers the very next day, proud of me for participating.
