Social-distancing protocols were firmly established, and beyond the bathroom, no one was allowed inside the house.
It was the end to a perfect night. As the bride and groom drove off from the driveway of our home around 1 a.m., it was time to finally relax. One last glass in hand, my husband Daniel and I toasted the triumph of having just hosted an elegant small wedding at our home. It was the first we had ever given over the course of our own three-decade marriage – and, more notably, the first that was held during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Their large wedding was now canceled due to the pandemic. But since the couple was moving to California the week after their planned wedding date, they did not want to postpone the ceremony. As Allie said of their decision to press ahead with a small family wedding, “We figured we are getting married for better or worse, and this pandemic is pretty much the worst, so we should just move forward and start living those vows.
After a family conference, my husband, Daniel, and I agreed that if allowed, we would host the wedding, On June 5, the governor said outdoor events with up to 250 people could take place with social distancing. Allie’s guest list suddenly seemed miniscule in comparison. We kicked into wedding action.
Another COVID concern was weather. If it rained, our only choice would be to have the entire event—from the ceremony and cocktails to dinner and dancing—under the 20-by-20 foot tent they were putting up over the deck. I would then have to allow guests onto the screened porch for everyone to socially distance. It would be possible to space everyone, particularly as many of the guests were quarantining together, but it would be a bit like moving chess pieces around.
