We are launching Somos, a cross-platform channel created in collaboration with the Latinx staff at Refinery29. We seek to elevate, educate, and inspire a new generation of changemakers committed to Latinx visibility.
When I was 16, my mother thought I should go to Ecuador to live with my grandparents for a bit. While I was there, I got my first job at a hair salon in Quito; I lied and said I was 21 so that I could get the job. But living in Ecuador didn't work out, especially with the challenges of going to school in a different language, so I returned to New York after a year.My family didn't see hairstyling as a real career.
