Liverpool Council has set out how it wants to make homelessness across the city “rare, brief and non-recurring” amid an ongoing housing crisis. The city’s cabinet is to seek community views on a strategy it hopes will tackle rough sleeping for the coming years As part of its statutory duties, the local authority has to set out how it seeks to ensure people have access to housing in times of crisis.
He added how Liverpool struggles with the prevention element more than other core cities but “homelessness is everyone’s problem”. Cabinet members said it was “vital” the city got to grips with the issue and had a conversation with residents on how best to build houses across the city. Cllr East said that repurposing housing stock that remained vacant was an “opportunity to be grasped”. Between 2017/18 and 2023/24, rough sleeping across Liverpool has increased by 141%.
