Stokes is a major doubt for tournament opener against New Zealand
Ben Stokes injury: How long England star is out for and who could replace him at Cricket World Cup 2023hero of their final win against the Black Caps at Lord’sAnd that was on the proviso the all-rounder would only come back as a batter following a long-term knee injury that restricted his ability to bowl during last summer’s Ashes series.
“We’ll make the right call. If he’s not fit to play, he’s not fit to play. If he is, we can make that decision. It’s not the time to take big risks on someone at the start of the tournament. Nearer the end, maybe you do take more of a risk with people’s injuries but it’s going to be a long tournament.
“We’ll see how the guys pull up here at training today and post-training, and then we can make our decisions.”If Stokes was unavailable on Thursday, it would open the door for Harry Brook to come into the XI at No 4 in the batting order. The 24-year-old was controversially left out of England’s provisional squad for the tournament and only made the squad for the tournament at the last minute following a back injury to Jason Roy.and has taken Test cricket by storm since making his debut last year. However, his top score in the recent three-match home series against New Zealand was 25 and he has only played six ODIs.
Asked if Brook could step in, Buttler said: “Potentially, yes. Harry could play in any team anyway. He is a fantastic player. If he is required, that is not the right word to be honest, he is a top player. He is very young in his 50-over career but the way he has taken to Test cricket and T20 cricket at international level this is a format that will suit him down to the ground.”
