With their club, The Colony, Lex and Neil Howard bring comedy and music to the Catskills.

In 2003, when Lex and Neil Howard first met, they sat down beside a local duck pond in San Francisco, got out a napkin and wrote down ideas about how their life together might shape up. One idea they had was to own some kind of an event space. They envisioned a place where all kinds of artists could come to perform. “We share a love of gathering people together,” says Lex.

After spending the day in Woodstock, they felt such a strong pull to the area, they decided to buy a home there. For Neil, the allure was the Woodstock arts and musical heritage and all it stands for. “Not just the 1969 festival but the earlier history of Woodstock and the Byrdcliffe Art Colony as one of the original beacons of the arts on the east coast,” says Lex.

They sat on the back deck of their home fantasizing about what they could do with the storied space just off the village green. “The hope was to make it feel original, old and eternal, like it has always been there—unchanged, but well-loved, since 1929,” explains Neil of the space which has a rich legacy of arts, community and music over the past 90 years. “The colony struck me as an antique that needed to be restored. Not so much a business, but a room that needed to be fixed up.
