Don’t confuse an annular and a total solar eclipse. On Saturday, October 14, an annular eclipse will be visible from a path across North, Central and South America. On that day, everyone in the U.S. and beyond will see a partial solar eclipse.Often called an “annual” solar eclipse by the media , there’s a lot of confusion about this kind of eclipse. That’s largely because there’s another, much more impactful, kind of solar eclipse also coming soon to North America on April 8, 2024.

“During a total eclipse the moon is closer and so it completely blocks the sun’s disc at that moment of perfect alignment,” said Nordgren. “Anybody within that shadow sees a total solar eclipse.”
