As a general election fast approaches, questions are already looming about what a Labour government will look like.
Sue Gray's ascension to the Labour Party - from civil service partygate investigator to Sir Keir Starmer's chief of staff - has delighted and rankled colleagues in equal measure. Since her arrival last autumn, Ms Gray has been subject to praise from shadow cabinet members and mayors, whom she is said to have brought closer to the Labour leader.
One Labour source in the north said the engagement with Ms Gray had been 'really positive' and started when she brought metro mayors together to discuss the response to the cancellation of the northern leg of HS2 last year - a sign that she wanted to bring regional leaders into critical policy debates.
