Rommy Hunt Revson’s friends, while impressed by her invention, speak more of her kindness and generosity. Revson died Sept. 7.

“When you met Rommy, she didn’t know any strangers,” said Kathleen Stallone of suburban Wellington. “She made you feel immediately like a friend. She had a big smile, a big heart, just welcomed everybody.”Revson, who lived in unincorporated Wellington, died Sept. 7 in Rochester, Minn., where she was undergoing tests for heart and lung ailments at the Mayo Clinic. She was 78.

Stallone spoke to Revson a few days before her death. “She was very optimistic” and pleased with the Mayo Clinic doctors, Stallone said. “This was shocking.”Rommy Kolb was born in 1944 in White Plains, New York. After finishing high school there, she began singing and playing piano at music venues in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village and beyond.

Revson told an interviewer she met the first two of her three husbands when they were audience members where she performed. She had a son by one of them, and sang professionally for six or seven years, Brower said. A man named Philips E. Meyers is often credited as having invented the scrunchie in the 1960s, but he didn’t obtain a patent and his creation was hardly known.Revson wanted a hair clip that was gentler than the typical metal and plastic accessories. Examining the elastic waistband of her pajamas, she decided in 1986 to buy a used sewing machine and sew fabric around a piece of elastic. She soon had a prototype of what she called a “Scunci” after her aged toy poodle of that name.

Scrunchies were enormously popular in the 1980s and ‘90s. Celebrities were seen wearing them. It was a symbol of power and status in the 1988 film, “Heathers.” Madonna wore one in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” and characters in hit television shows such as “Friends” and “Seinfeld” sported them. She loved dogs and horses and even played polo when she was younger, Brower said. Cooking was another passion.
