Michael Bolognino and Nick Spain cite several inspirations for the interiors of their 19th century Italianate-style farmhouse in the Berkshires, which is fast becoming one of the mostOne was Donald Judd, the artist whose contributions to Marfa honored the culture of the Texas town yet “ultimately contemporized it in a way that felt like it had always been there,” says Spain.
“We used the existing Italianate architecture as a jumping-off point, but instead of doing something strictly period-appropriate, we looked to Italian modernists and contemporary designers as points of inspiration,” says Spain. “We’re always inspired by design that takes the more obtuse, not-so-obvious entry point,” Bolognino adds.
But perhaps their greatest muses were two names art history has never heard at all: their grandmothers.In the living room sits a leafy green plant, given to Bolognino by his grandma 20 years ago as he visited her one last time before moving cross-country.
