Then use a paring knife or a sharp pin to trace the design onto the pumpkin by poking small holes. Then, apply the traced design as a stencil and use the same hole-poking technique to trace a light outline onto the pumpkin.
Another option? Just draw a design free-form onto the pumpkin. You can use a pencil to do this lightly first, then go over it with a permanent marker once the basic design has been established.
If you've cut out the base of the pumpkin instead of the top lid, you can wrap a jar in a strand of white holiday string lights and place the jar inside the pumpkin, threading the chord out through the hole you cut and then plugging it in. All that's left to do now is admire your beautiful handiwork. And, put your pumpkin out on the front porch so it can frighten or bedazzle come Halloween night!
