How To Get Along With Anyone At Work (Even Difficult People) via forbeswomen. MelodyWilding interviews amyegallo about Amy's forthcoming book, Getting Along.
Fast forward just a few months and I was already thinking, this is too much! She was insecure, she was a micromanager, she fit so many of the archetypes in my book that was to come. This experience really opened my eyes to how draining this situation can be. No matter how good you think you are at soft skills or getting along with others, dealing with conflict at work can be extremely challenging.
For example, in my book I write about being on a Zoom call where you notice that someone is rolling their eyes, it happens several times. By the end when you disconnect, you’re feeling dissed and angry. But, what you didn’t know, was that every time their eyes ticked up, they were checking the clock on the wall to make sure they weren’t late to pick up their child from school.
Another important tool to grounding yourself is the concept of naive realism. We often think that our perception of reality is very clear. Then when someone doesn’t see a situation the same way, we just assume they’re wrong or misguided. We like to think we are seeing all angles but often we aren’t. This is another area where bias can creep in. For example, if we run late for meeting and we are thinking of all the reasons that ran us late, we naturally validate our circumstances.
