The 10-day festival marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali, according to Hindu legend
They sent the god Vamana to Earth in the form of a dwarf, Brahmin. Vamana asked Mahabali for some land, and the generous king agreed. Vamana only asked for as much land as could be covered by his three steps, but expanded to cosmic proportions, so that two steps covered the whole universe. With nowhere for Vamana to place his third step, and realising it would destroy the Earth, Mahabali offered his head instead.
Witnessing Mahabali’s generosity, Vamana granted the king a wish to visit his land and subjects once every year. His homecoming is celebrated as Onam.Celebrations on the first day of Onam are marked by intricate floral carpets calledThe biggest celebrations come on, the final day of the festival. People clean their houses, take early baths, wear new clothes and perform elaborate prayers.is the focal point of the day, which people partake in even if they struggle to afford it.
There are a number of games that are played to mark Onam, from indoor card games to archery, combat sports and boat races.
