If the United States do conquer Rome then Phil Mickelson will deserve some credit for ‘taking a bullet’ at Gleneagles
Mickelson wanted the players front of centre of the Ryder Cup project, to have a connected captain with recent playing experience and a greater influence in the selection process. The Gleneagles meltdown led to the formation of a “task force” which was essentially a tight group of significant players who would drill into the secrets of European success in order to replicate it.
“Mickelson brought up this task force thing. He was kind of mapping out the whole reason for it,” Cannizzaro tells“The American understanding was that Europe was much more united, and part of that was the succession plan where they would bring up the ladder guys as vice-captains and those guys would end up as captains.
