You can never overlook, or underestimate, therefore the importance of the Old Firm bragging rights. It might be petty and inconsequential to those not brought up in the rivalry but it is not far off being the meaning of life for those who see the domination of the other lot as the very reason for their club’s existence.
For Celtic not to win the championship under those circumstances would be seen as a betrayal of the fans. And it would surely cause Rodgers to reflect on the extent to which his warnings about snoozing and standing still are being heeded by those who employ him. The Champions League is an irrelevance.
