Holmes’ romantic relationship with Theranos ex-President Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani is another important aspect of her rise. Balwani, played by Naveen Andrews , is a wealthy entrepreneur 18 years her senior. They met on a college immersive language program in China and quickly became both romantically and professionally entangled, their relationship kept secret.
During her recent trial, Holmes accused Balwani of physical and psychological abuse, which are shown in “The Dropout.” But instead of painting Holmes as a victim, the show portrays her as a calculating businesswoman leveraging Balwani’s affection in order to convince him to invest millions in the company .
