1,900 GPs have quit primary care since 2015 and family doctors fear more will follow the longer the dispute between the British Medical Association and the Government continues 🔴 Exclusive from PMGallagher1
the longer junior doctor strikes continueDr Selvaseelan Selvarajah, GP Partner at Bromley by Bow Health in east London, said although the short-term impact of the strikes on family practices will be “variable”, the long-term impact could be much more problematic.. “The waiting list for treatment in England is already over 7.2 million people and months of industrial action will add to that.
“Our consultation rates will increase so there is the obvious danger of further burnout among already overworked, experienced staff“Then there is the other end of the spectrum with IMGs [international trainees] who now constitute up to 40 per cent of GP trainee workforce, in some regions up to 70 per cent, will not stick around to work in the NHS with all the chaos with junior doctors pay and working doctors.
Health officials said it is inevitable all areas of the NHS will be affected by this week’s 96 hour walkout by up to 61,000 junior doctors in England, but stressed GPs are open and anyone with an appointment who has not heard otherwise should attend as normal.
