The wreckage from one of the deadliest shipwrecks in recent Mediterranean history is going on display in Venice
in June 2016 by the Italian Navy at a dept of over 1,200 feet. After some legal and bureaucratic wrangling, it will be exhibited in the Venice Arsenale during the biennale -- known as the"Olympics of the art world" -- as a stark reminder of the tragedy.
"The vessel has become a symbolic object, dedicated not only to the victims of the tragic event in 2015 and the people involved in its recovery, but to our mutual responsibility representing the collective policies and politics that create such wrecks," it says. The project involved months of painstaking negotiation with the Italian government.
Among the survivors of the shipwreck was the boat's captain, who was later sentenced to 18 years in prison for manslaughter.
