Water firms including Thames Water, Anglian Water and Southern Water released raw sewage as their systems became overwhelmed by heavy rain
– which provides in depth data to the Rivers Trust – registered 263 overflows across its network in the past 48 hours.
To prevent their systems becoming overwhelmed under exceptional conditions, water companies are permitted to discharge raw sewage from 14,500 outlets across the country.by Rasheed Araeen in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Environmental campaigners expressed concern at the water network’s lack of resilience, with the rainiest three months of the year – October, November and December – soon approaching.
“With many months of colder, stormier weather ahead, we fear more spills will occur, underlining the need for rapid investment in natural solutions and tougher regulations.”He said: “Autumn hasn’t yet begun and here we are again with heavy rains and a totally unprepared water industry. Now is the time to send a clear message to water bosses that the hay days of polluting for profit have ended.
Thames Water is facing a financial crisis, with more than £15bn in debts and reportedly only enough funds to run its operations for a matter of months.
