At least two people are reported to have died in the hurricane so far.
A deadly hurricane which has been tearing through the Caribbean is intensifying as it moves towards Jamaica.
Mikey Hutchinson, a journalist in Grenada, told the BBC's Newsday programme that at the height of the storm the situation had been "really, really bad". "The reports that I have received indicate that 90% of the houses have been severely damaged or destroyed," he said.Thousands of people are still without power and many are in temporary shelters in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and St Lucia.
A government official said that while the country had "dodged a bullet", people should not let down their guard as "gusts are still coming, the storm-force winds are still coming".Meteorologists from the National Hurricane Center say Beryl continues to strengthen as it moves through the south-eastern Caribbean.
But the mayor of the resort town of Montego Bay warned residents not to take a "wait and see" attitude and urged them to be "prepared for anything".
