Similar to discussions after Hurricane Ian, people said they were surprised by Hurricane Ike’s storm surge “despite public warnings.”Until 2010, storm surge was included as part of the Saffir-Simpson scale. The hurricane center removed the storm surge information from the scale saying it was “scientifically inaccurate.”
Storm surge watches were issued for parts of the Gulf Coast, including Lee County, before Ian even became a hurricane. Former National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham, who is now director of the National Weather Service, said in a presentation last year that more people died from carbon monoxide poisoning after a storm between 2016 and 2020 than storm surge.
