Hurricane Lee is weakening as it moves into cooler waters ahead of an expected landfall this weekend in Canada.

That rip current risk is likely to extend through the weekend as Lee, now a weakening Category 2 storm, makes its closest pass to New Jersey on Friday and Saturday hundreds of miles off shore. In addition to the high risk of rip currents that has local officials calling for people to stay out of the ocean, a high surf advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Saturday for the Jersey Shore. Waves of 4 to 6 feet will increase to 6 to 8 feet by Thursday night, the National Weather Service said.those who defy swimming bans or try to enter the water when lifeguards are not on duty that they could face police summonses.

Hurricane Lee's effects on New Jersey will be limited to the Jersey Shore — beach erosion and minor flooring, according t AccuWeather.com.Winds on Saturday will be as high as 25 mph in Sandy Hook, the weather service said. Otherwise conditions across New Jersey will be very pleasant all weekend with partly sunny skies and highs in the 70s on Friday and Saturday and near 80 inland on Sunday.
