Samantha Barbash—the Bronx-born brunette who inspired Lopez’s Hustlers character—has filed a $40 million lawsuit against the film
, Barbash is asking for “$20 million in punitive damages and $20 million in compensatory damages—and wants the company to turn over every copy of the movie.”story line in which Lopez’s character Ramona concocts her own drug recipe to incapacitate clients and steal money from them.
“First of all, there are drug dealers for that,” Barbash pointed out. “Second of all, I would never know how to do anything like that. The concoction is unheard of…and making the drugs with her daughter in the house…I’m actually offended by that. That’s attacking my character. I’m a mother.” Gioffre claims that STX Entertainment made similar offers to other women featured in Pressler’s article—asking them to film an interview in exchange for a nominal sum. “It is our understanding that at least two of the other girls agreed to this and ironically did not appear in the movie,” said Gioffre. “It is our contention that this was a ruse and an attempt by the production company to bait Samantha into giving away her rights which would have also barred her from bringing this lawsuit.
Gioffre said that there was a delay in filing the lawsuit because Barbash’s “legal team needed to watch the movie several times and do a great deal of legal research before bringing this action.” Asked whether Barbash has been following Lopez’s awards trajectory, Gioffre said, “Samantha didn’t watch the Golden Globes and hasn’t been following Jennifer’s awards campaign but does not have ill will toward Jennifer and wishes her nothing but the best with her accolades. We would hope that Jennifer would want Samantha to be compensated for what she deserves.”attempted to hustle Samantha into signing away her rights for a mere $6,000 which she was way too savvy to agree to.
