It's a simple matter of numbers: The Elantra is less expensive than the Sonata, and not by just a little bit. Prices start at just under $21,000 for the Elantra but about $25,000 for the Sonata. The range-topping Elantra Limited runs for about $26,500, a little less than the Sonata SEL, one step up from the base model. The Limited trimThe price delta is similar for the hybrid models.
If you live somewhere with tight streets and parking spaces, you know that every inch makes a difference. If you're one of those folks, the Elantra could be a better choice for you. It measures 184.1 inches end-to-end, while the Sonata is 192.9 inches long. Wheelbase measures 107.1 inches on the Elantra, and 111.8 inches on the Sonata. Width is close, but the Elantra is narrower, spanning 71.9 inches against the Sonata's 73.2 inches.
The advantage in trunk capacity goes to the Sonata, but again it's close to the Elantra: 16.0 cubic feet against 14.2 cubic feet. Note that split-folding second-row seats are included on all variants except for the base Elantra SE model.Hyundai surprised us with the Sonata N Line—we never expected the sporty version of this midsize sedan to be. The Elantra also has an N Line with good low-end torque, but it only makes 201 hp and exhibits a bit of turbo lag.
