Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis owners file class-action suit over alleged EV charge port issues.
in five to seven hours. But some owners claim those figures have not been entirely representative of their personal experiences. Owners involved in the suit say there is a defect in the charge port itself, which causes the unit to overheat in as little as 30 minutes of charging. Despite Hyundai claiming the vehicles are capable of supporting charging rates up to 48 amps, owners in the suit say they have had charging failures at charging rates as low as 28 amps.
"Hyundai is aware of isolated reports of charging interruptions with the IONIQ 5 when used in connection with certain level 2 home chargers," a spokesperson told"A software update is available for IONIQ 5 owners encountering this issue that reduces the likelihood of a stopped charging session by slowing the charging rate in response to charging temperature increases. Hyundai is further investigating the issue to determine the root cause and evaluate other possible solutions.
“Not only do Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis continue to sell vehicles that are clearly incapable of performing as advertised, they also issued a software patch which substantially worsens charging rates and widens the gap between what they promised and what they delivered,” said Steve Berman, a managing partner in the firm representing the owners.
