Updated: Traffic crashes on Interstate 70 have shut down the highway over Vail Pass in both directions as wintry weather conditions hammer the area.
The westbound lanes are closed between Exit 190, the Vail Pass Summit, and Exit 180, East Vail, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
At least four cars were involved in “slide-off” crashes and a semi-truck jackknifed and rolled, according to the state patrol. A saddle tank on the semi-truck ruptured, and hazmat crews have contained the spill, the state patrol said. No waterways were impacted. The truck driver has “minor” injuries. Road conditions on Vail Pass are snow packed and icy, drivers using the mountain corridor are urged to slow down and keep plenty of distance from other drivers using the highway.
A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of the Colorado mountains, including Summit County where up to 15 inches of new snow is possible by Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
