John Aldridge reflects on the Merseyside derby in part one of his weekly Liverpool column
I am confused by the Everton fans suggesting they were robbed by the referee during Saturday's Merseyside derby.
A lot of people have been suggesting decisions went the way of Liverpool because of all the noise made by the club on the back of Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal at Tottenham Hotspur last month. If that was the case, why didn’t Craig Pawson give us a penalty for the Michael Keane handball? I could see it from 200 yards away up in the stands, doing the commentary.
Another talking point was the Ashley Young red card, but no Everton fan can seriously moan about that. The first challenge was a booking and then he got away with kicking the ball away shortly afterwards. It was as though he didn’t want to play the game and couldn’t wait to get off the pitch! I was looking at young Jarrad Branthwaite in the Everton defence, who was probably the Man of the Match, acting in the responsible way he did.
The Evertonians must have been expecting a little bit more, to be honest. That’s where they are at the moment and we know where we are, not far from the top of the table. We got what we deserved, at the end of the day. Even if Everton had eleven men, we still would have won the game. When you’ve got eleven men behind the ball, you can’t feel hard done by about not coming away with the three points.
