The starters include anguille Fumee , bouchee a champignon and of course souple a l’oignon, which doesn’t require an explanation. Not feeling adventurous enough for eel or snails, I selected the tart tatin aux oignon et brie, putting my faith in the trusted combination of cheese, onion and pastry.
But this was swiftly forgotten upon tucking in. The chunks of beef were so tender they melted in the mouth and the sauce was richly flavoured, spiked with salty lardons. It was complemented with the soft mashed potato, helping to soak up the sauce. The veg was as bland as it looked - like the salad garnish of the previous dish, it felt like a bit of a necessity rather than a well-thought out component of the meal .
