Kris Mayes, the leader in an extraordinarily close race for Arizona attorney general, urged those waiting for an official winner to"trust the process" as plans for a statewide recount gear up.She expressed confidence that her lead would hold and some of her priorities as attorney general if she is sworn in to the office.
Maricopa County, the last county in Arizona with outstanding ballots, announced the outcome of its final batch of votes Monday. After 13 days of tallying in the state, Mayes led Republican Abe Hamadeh by 510 votes. The vote differential is less than half a percentage point, which triggers an automatic recount under Arizona law. The recount is scheduled to begin after Dec. 5, when the Secretary of State's Office certifies the election results.
"We ask everyone out there to be patient and trust in this process," she said at a news conference in central Phoenix."At the end of the day, it's going to be our job to stay out of the way of the elections officials and let them do their jobs. I have faith in our elections officials and their ability to do this recount."Arizona Attorney General-elect Kris Mayes talks about election on Nov. 22, 2022, in downtown Phoenix.
Mayes promised to take politics out of the office if the recount confirms her lead, which she believes it will. She also said that as attorney general, she would hold regular news conferences and"office hours" throughout the state to meet with Arizonans to hear their concerns.
