This week, counsellor and author Lucy Cavendish advises a reader who has been called selfish by her husband for taking a stand
‘My husband says I’m selfish and I’m going to ruin it for the kids and family’ Not only am I a wife, mother of three, and caretaker to my mother-in-law, but also a cleaner, cook, chauffeur, and personal assistant to my family – and, as December creeps up – Santa too.
However what you are actually saying is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. And, in fact, in your bit of a “rant” as you call it, you are naming all the stuff that you do. You are a human doing and not a human being. This is not good. But in order to change this you are going to have to change how you feel about yourself on the level of identity.
What is it within you that makes yourself do all this? Ask yourself what you are gaining by doing everything but also be interested in the cost to you. It’s no fun being a martyr and yet so many people sign up to a life that they claim they don’t want to have whilst very much endeavouring to have it.
The thing to realise is that people don’t care as much as we do; on some level we may truly believe that if we don’t do all these practical things the world will fall apart but underneath all that there might be a little smidgeon of you that knows that’s not true.
